HARLEY KORNBLUM, MD, PhD
Professor Department of Molecular & Medical Pharmacology/Pediatrics/Psychiatry
Harley Kornblum is the Founding Director of the Neural Stem Cell Research Center, and Associate Professor of Psychiatry, Pharmacology and Pediatrics. Dr. Kornblum is a leader in the field of epidermal growth factor receptors and their roles in the developing and injured brain. Included in this work were pioneering studies in the use of imaging methods for the study of brain repair. He started work in neural stem cell biology in the late 1990's and, along with his colleagues at UCLA and Stanford University, published some of the most highly cited studies of neural stem cell gene expression. Dr. Kornblum’s lab elucidated the role of some of the key genes in neural stem cell biology. Furthermore, his laboratory became a leader in the area of Cancer Stem Cells, discovering key links between these specialized, deleterious stem cells and brain tumors. Much of Dr. Kornblum's work aims to discover key mechanisms that both underly normal brain development and how these systems can go awry in cancer, genetic disorders and how they may be utilized for brain repair. Dr. Kornblum is a clinically active Pediatric Neurologist at the Mattel Children's Hospital at UCLA and cares for children with a variety of neurological disorders.
